Mayor Frank Branca resigned abruptly as mayor on 4/3/1989 -- two hours before the city was to consider slashing his $24,000-a-year pension to $3,000 annually.
Branca who had been mayor since 1983, said quitting to keep his pension intact was ``but one factor`` in his decision to resign.
He said the more pressing reason was to avoid a divisive power struggle with newly elected Commissioner Dan Lewis and commission President Bill Cresswell, a longtime Branca foe.
