Description |
This election shows the nationwide vote by party for all U.S. Senate seats as of the general election of 1918.
In the election of 1918, the Republicans took control of the Senate, scoring a net gain of four Senate seats plus three in special elections. They had already picked up a Senate seat in Wisconsin in a special election in the spring of 1918. Overall, the Republicans won 18 seats to 14 for the Democrats (including only three outside of the South). As a result, the party breakdown immediately following the election was Republicans 48, Democrats 47, and Progressive Republican 1 (Hiram W. Johnson - CA). Johnson voted with the Republicans to organize the Senate.
