The Whig state convention met in Harrisburg on 3/4/1844 (same day as the Democratic state convention also in Harrisburg). In the race for canal commissioner, the delegates nominated Guilford on the 4th ballot:
1st ballot: Mehaffy 46, Guilford 40, Tweed 24, Taylor 12, Craighead 5
2d ballot: Mehaffy 57, Guilford 46, Tweed 20, Taylor 5
3d ballot: Mehaffy 63, Guilford 60, Tweed 5, Taylor 1
4th ballot: Guilford 66, Mehaffy 59, Tweed 2
