Description |
Johnson elected on the first ballot.
Originally Representative Keith Self voted for Byron Donalds and Representative Ralph Norman voted for Jim Jordan. However, before the vote was finalized Self and Norman changed their votes to Mike Johnson.
Representative Thomas Massie voted for Tom Emmer.
Senator Rand Paul and Representatives Jim Jordan, Steve Scalise, and Tom Emmer suggested Elon Musk as a potential Speaker making him a speculative candidate. Prior to the election Elon Musk endorsed Johnson for Speaker.
434 of 435 Representatives voted as the November 15, 2024 resignation of FL-01 Representative Matt Gaetz left one House seat vacant for the Speaker election.

Once again hilarious that the Republicans are going to choke at electing a speaker once again.

An unlikely scenario, but it'd be funny if just enough Republicans form an Alaska-style coalition with Democrats and elect Hakeem Jeffries as speaker.

I'll go on the record saying that there might be one round where Republicans will be "allowed" to vote their conscious or grandstand. I expect that by the second round there will be enough pressure on the Chip Roys and Thomas Massies to get in line making it a 219-215 vote since Gaetz's seat is the only one really vacant at this point.
Victoria Spartz seems like a total wildcard though. Could make it 218-215-1.

It looks like the holdouts are just doing exactly that. Holding out.

Oh, I'm watching it but my television is acting up, someone voted Jim Jordan and another guy voted Byron Donalds. The other usual nutcases who hate Johnson because he's too moderate are abstaining.
There's also expected to be a second round as Johnson doesn't have the votes to be speaker.

I have more respect for the nutcases who actually vote against Johnson rather than the ones who abstain.

No, Chip Roy is the one who made a big stink and then abstained.
BBC Live Reporting is reporting that Chip Roy voted for Johnson.
The clerk is now reading the names of those who did not vote. Some are casting ballots for Johnson, who has returned and is watching from the front of the chamber.
Chip Roy of Texas, who was considered one of the leaders of the group, just voted for Johnson.
That elicited another round of chatter - and an audible ooo-hoo from one of the Democrats https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c77j0n6385zt?post=asset%3Aa86186a8-b9e4-475c-a82e-8903228b348f#post

So....does it go down officially as winning on the 1st ballot? Norman and Self changing 1st ballot votes?

No way Musk was ever in the running he would never ask to be put in a position to have to work a real job
Or have even the minimal financial transparency required to hold legislative office.
