A lot of people seem to be unable to read the part of the page that says: "Filing Deadline March 25, 2024 - 12:00am Central" which means that nobody else CAN be in the primary....

I'd imagine that the party organization would have to be in a weird spot of "being so organized that they can win a primary with a write-in candidate" but feeling that's a better route than just waiting to replace Payne later

So any possible replacement candidates with a chance of winning are probably good enough at math to realize they can't beat Payne as a write-in? especially in a primary that might not have much turnout anyways

Yeah, but in practice filing deadline are often much more complicated then the one spot we have for them here. Sometimes official write-ins can be after the official date. In non-partisan races there can be different dates for independents. Maybe in a case like this the filing deadline is waived or a party can step in and add a candidate.

Will this end up being a special election? Or held vacant until its filled in the general? Anybody know?

I think this is ultimately a question of gubernatorial discretion. After Frank Lautenberg died in 2013, then Governor Christie held a special election for the senate seat in October of that year (outside of even the normal state elections that were to happen in November). Still, the rules may be different for House vs Senate, and I'll see what I can find re: statutes

I'm curious if someone is going to run a write in campaign?

Don't think so.

It just makes more sense to try and shoot for the Replacement Nomination
