Description | Scotland
Part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Scotland is one of the countries that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Scotland lies north of England and east of Northern Ireland. Its vast countryside was once home of several independent kingdoms before unification with England through the Act of Union in 1707, a document proclaiming the creation of Great Britain.
The early Scots were a Gaelic speaking people who invaded and settled the west coast in AD 470, known then as Dalriada, having come over the sea from Ireland. Scandinavian Viking people invaded the far north, west coast and offshore islands and stayed on. In the south, Strathclyde Britons, a Welsh speaking people, and early Saxon settlers, put down encampments. With the first overseas trade initiatives appeared merchants, and following William the Conqueror's invasion of England in 1066, Norman-born fortune hunters arrived in Scotland.
King Robert the Bruce beat back the English invasion of 1314, thus unifying the several independent kingdoms into a single, mightier kingdom. When King James assumed the throne of Scotland, he acquired England and moved the capital of his unified kingdom to London. In 1707 the parliaments of England and Scotland were united. It wasn't until the end of the 20th century that Scotland would begin to see a loosening of authority from London.
In 1999, Scotland achieved the right to its own devolved government and reconvened the Scottish Parliament for the first time since adjourning in 1707. With a devolved relationship with the British Parliament, Scots now have autonomy over its own domestic affairs.
