Ohio has Cities, Villages, Census Designated Places and Unincorporated Places. In Ohio, once a Village reaches 5,000 residents, it may upgrade to a City. Census Designated Places or CDPs are unincorporated towns the US Census tracks specifically and have map boundaries. Cities and Villages have elected governments. Cities and Villages must have unique names throughout the state. CDPs and Unincorporated towns may have duplicate names.

Ohio has Townships. Townships usually have a small 3 member trustee elected government and provide certain services to their residents. Cities and Villages may choose to detach from the Township(s) they are in and provide these services themselves. Townships do not need to have unique names throughout the state and often the same Township name is in multiple counties.
