Liberal racialist party focused on the development of educational and economical opportunities for Suriname's 'maroon' population. Party was launched as the Progressive Boseger Party (PBP).
Party had gone too far in its racial 'studies' and wound up forced to change its direction and its name in the late 1970s/early 1980s when a ban was instituted on the formation of political parties on a racial basis.
The name changed to Rural Resident Party (also PBP) then in 2019, it was revamped as the VVD under its new leader, the youngest female cabinet minister in Suriname's history, Alice Amafo.
