| Description | Center-right, "aswaja" or Islam-traditionalist party launched by kyai Islamic scholars on the island of Java. Party follows closely the teachings of the Nahdlatul 'Ulama (NU) which preaches toleration toward local cultures as long as their way of being does not contradict the Koran, and also supports the secularist Pancasila (Indonesian-nationalist) doctrine as promulgated by President Sukarno. The PKB was able to thrive after 2nd President Suharto resigned on May 21, 1998. The PKB has been led by Deputy Council Speaker Muhaimin Iskandar since April 18, 2005 [Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB)]. |
