Marxist-Leninist party and successor to the defunct Socialist Union of the Working People of Macedonia active until the extraordinary 14th Congress of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia was convened on January 1, 1990, on the cusp of the breakup of Yugoslavia. Party was founded by professor, former Communist party executive and former VP of the Macedonian Assembly Kiro Popovski. Party has been led by its general secretary, Ljupco Dimovski, Minister for Agriculture from 2009 to 2014, upon Popovski's death in 2014. Party has been a member of the coalition led by VMRO-DPMN since 2008, and holds two seats in the Macedonian Assembly [Socijalistička Partija na Makedonija; Социјалистичка партија на Македонија (SPM)].
