Christian democratic party in the Netherlands, formed as a coalition in 1977 of the Catholic People's Party, the Anti-Revolutionary Party and the Christian Historical Union. Became a single political party in 1980, and has been a member of most governments since its creation.
Ideology contains centrist and centre-right elements; party had a sizable centre-left wing during its history. Party's base of support is primarily elderly, religious, and rural voters. [Christen-Democratisch Appèl, CDA]
