| Description | Pan-Islamist to jihadist movement and former militia led by the Republic of Jubaland's President since May 15, 2013, Ahmed Mohamed Islam. The movement emerged from the Raskamboni Brigades, founded by Islamic Courts Union commander Hassan Abdullah Hersi al-Turki. The Raskamboni fought against the jihadist al-Shabab beginning in 2011, later supported by units of the Kenyan Air Force and the Somali Armed Forces, in a battle to re-take the soon-to-be capital of an independent Jubaland, Kismayo (called the the Battle of Kismayo). The Raskamboni became the predominant political force upon the inauguration of the Republic of Jubaland, the stirrings of which began in late February 2013, culminating with a provisional constitution signed on April 5, 2013. Kenya, keen to create a buffer zone to protect its territory form al-Shabab incursions, played an important role in process of the Republic's birth. Movement is co-chaired by Maalim Mohamud [Xarakada Raaskambooni (XR)]. |
