Description | Left-wing nationalist, regionally and locally-dominant party chaired since November 1, 2016 by Sri Lanka's former and current (since August 15, 2021) Foreign Minister G. L. Peiris. Party began in 2001 as a vehicle for the political ambitions of Sri Lanka's current prime minister and former president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, calling itself the Sri Lanka Jathika Peramuna (Sri Lanka National Front). After years of electoral failure, the party decided to change direction and its name to Ape Sri Lanka Nidahas Peramuna (Our Sri Lanka Freedom Front, OSLFF) in 2015, relaunching itself again in November 2016 as the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). |
