Description | Originally a faction in the official CPGB grouped around a journal called "The Leninist," this faction claimed the name Communist Party of Great Britain (while noting that they not yet that party in a meaningful sense by adding "(Provisional Central Committee)" to their name when the official CPGB dissolved itself in 1991. The CPGB(PCC) ran candidates under its own banner in the 1992 UK general and 1994 European elections, and in local elections until 1999 when the UK's electoral commission ruled it could not run under the "Communist" label, as that right had been awarded to the Communist Party of Britain (a group which had split from the official CPGB in the late 80s around the Morning Star newspaper). Since that ruling, they have run candidates under the "Weekly Worker" name (the "Weekly Worker" being the name of their newspaper), and have also participated in most of the various attempts to build a party to the left of the Labour Party from the 1990s to 2010s, including the Socialist Labour Party, Socialist Alliance, Scottish Socialist Party, Respect, and Left Unity.
From the party's website:
"The Communist Party of Great Britain is a revolutionary political organisation that fights to create in Britain a genuine mass Communist Party cohered around a genuine communist programme, and for communist leadership of the workers movement in Britain, Europe and internationally. Our goal is to overthrow capitalism and build a communist society free from the exploitation and oppression that characterise all class societies." |
