Description | Shia-Muslim party identified as closely allied with the Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanon's largest Shia party in parliament. Party was co-founded by Iranian scholar and militia leader Musa al-Sadr and former Parliament Speaker
Hussein el-Husseini. Party was launched on the cusp of the Lebanese Civil War, building its own militia ahead of the 15-year conflict in support of Syria, Shia and Iranian interests, calling the militia the 'Lebanese Resistance Battalions' led by al-Sadr. Militia was renamed after Sadr's nom de guerre Afwaj al-Mouqawma Al-Lubnaniyya which forms the acronym AMAL. Party is chaired by Nabih Berri, Lebanon's Speaker of Parliament [Ḥarakat Amal (HA) 'Hope Movement' حركة أمل; shortened to Amal, أمل]. |
