Description | Left-of-center party founded by groups opposed to the Philippines' 10th President Ferdinand Marcos (December 30, 1965 - February 25, 1986). Party was formed from a merger of Aquilino Pimentel's Partido Demokratiko Pilipino and Ninoy Aquino's Lakas ng Bayan. Party was instrumental in bringing into power Corazon Aquino as President after snap elections held in 1986. A schism in 1988 forced party president José "Peping" Sumulong Cojuangco Jr. to depart with allies to form the rival Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) on September 16, 1988. The departures contrived an almost 20-year collapse of the party where it fell to 0 to 5 seats in both the House and Senate. The PDP-Laban saw a reversal of fortune in 2016 when Rodrigo Duterte became president of the nation. Party president was Senator and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao until disputes with President Rodrigo forced his departure on July 17, 2021 [Link] replaced by Energy Minister Alfonso Cusi [Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP–Laban)]. |
