Description | One-time ruling party of Myanmar holding a supermajority of seats in both chambers of the Burmese parliament and all State and Regional Hluttaws from November 2015 until February 1, 2021, when the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces) launched a coup d'état. Party was led and identified with former Burma President Aung San Suu Kyi, who had been a figurehead during the People Power Uprising of 1988 [aka, "8-8-88 Uprising" as it began on August 8, 1988]. Party took control of government after elections were held in 2015. Aung San Suu Kyi became the nation's Foreign Affairs Minister on March 30, 2016 and State Counselor (in effect, Prime Minister) on April 6, 2016. After the military takeover on February 1, 2021, Aung San Suu Kyi was deposed and NLD party leaders and members were subsequently incarcerated or executed. The NLD was dissolved by the junta-controlled Union Election Commission on March 28, 2023 [အမျိုးသား ဒီမိုကရေစီ အဖွဲ့ချုပ်]. |
