Leading representative party of Surinamese 'Maroons' (descendants of Africans in the Americas who escaped from slavery) formed by members expelled from the Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BEP). Party made a mark when it launched a bi-ethnic ('Javanese' and 'Maroons') anti-government alliance in 2005 called the Alternative Combination (A-Combinatie, AC). Alliance was dissolved in 2020. Party is chaired by former rebel leader and Suriname Vice President (since July 16, 2020) Ronnie Brunswijk [Algemene Bevrijdings- en Ontwikkelingspartij, ABOP].
