Description | Center-left party and Sweden's oldest and largest, holding power uninterruptedly from 1936 to 1976. Party is best known for pioneering the 'mixed economic system' - tempering a market economy with regulations in order to achieve a 'cradle-to-grave' welfare society. Party began to lose its grip in the 1970s as a result of economic upheavals and societal changes, factors which contributed to bringing about its ouster in 1976. Though still predominant, the party's share of popular support has dwindled steadily since then, falling to 28.3% after elections held on September 9, 2018, which translated into a mandate of 100 seats, the lowest number its seen since 1932. Party has been chaired since November 4, 2021 by Magdalena Andersson, Sweden's Prime Minister beginning November 30, 2021 [officially, the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Sweden Party; Sveriges Socialdemokratiska Arbetareparti (SAP); and called The Worker's Party – The Social Democrats (Arbetarepartiet – Socialdemokraterna) on ballot papers]. |
