Description | Kazakhstan's dominant party since its first congress was held on March 1, 1999, officially dissolved on its 23rd anniversary on March 1, 2022 after insurrectionary forces almost brought down the Kazakh government in early 2022. Party was launched at the initiative of the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. Party began as "Otan" (Fatherland) and was renamed "Nur Otan" (Radiant Fatherland) on December 22, 2006. Despite resigning from the presidency on March 29, 2019, Nursultan Nazarbayev held the post of party Chairman, a position he held since March 1, 1999, until unrest in Kazakhstan beginning on January 2, 2022 forced President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to dismiss Nazarbayev as Chairman on January 28, 2022. Tokayev assumed the chairmanship powers himself. With the cinders of a national uprising still burning, Nur Otan was dissolved at an extraordinary meeting on March 1, 2022 at Tokayev's instigation, and 'reborn' as Amanat (Аманат, 'Ancestral Will') with Tokayev as its new head with a stated purpose of 'wiping the slate clean' [Нұр Отан,'Radiant Fatherland']. |
