Description | Center-left, secularist party led since September 2002 by Comoros President, Azali Assoumani. Assoumani was a member of a faction within the now defunct Comorian Democratic Front (Front Démocratique des Comores, FDC) founded by exiled coup-leader Mustapha Saïd Cheikh. The faction formed itself into own party on July 25, 2000, calling itself the Movement for Socialism and Democracy (Mouvement pour le Socialisme et la Démocratie, MSD). Upon Assoumani's ascension as President of the nation on May 26, 2002, MSD members announced the creation of the CRC, mainly for use as a vehicle to support Assoumani's ambitions. Party stayed in the opposition until 2020, when it managed to win 20 out of 33 seats in Parliament after elections held on January 19 and February 23, 2020. Party's general secretary is Houmed M'saidié [Convention pour le Renouveau des Comores (CRC)]. |
