Marxist-Leninist party created from the union of a number of Communist organizations formed after they split from the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) over its decision to be less pro-Soviet Union. The parties which held a national congress between January 13-15, 1984 and decided to unite were the Party of Communists of Catalonia, the Communist Party of Spain Unified, the Movement for the Recovery of the PCE, the Movement for the Reconstruction and Unification of the PCE, and the Communist Cells. New party was recognized instantly by the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries and its bitter battle with the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) has continued to this day. Party was later joined by a large part of Spanish Civil War general Enrique Líster's Spanish Communist Workers Party (PCOE) in 2000. The PCPE's general secretary has been Julio Diaz since 2020 [Partido Comunista de los Pueblos de España (PCPE)].
