DescriptionLaunched in 1921 as a Portuguese branch of the Comintern, party was banned and forced to operate sub-rosa at the tail-end of the First Republic period (1910–1926) and persecuted under the Salazar dictatorship during the Second Republic (begun in 1933).

Party came back in force during the turbulent "Carnation Revolution" period begun in April 25, 1974, linking itself with the revolutionary Armed Forces Movement (MFA), which took command of the government post-revolution. The PCP subsequently felt strong enough to launch a coup in November 25, 1975 (met with a Socialist counter-coup shortly thereafter).

Party has declined in Assembly representation substantially (from 29 deputies in 1987 to 10 today) since it joined in coalition with the Ecologist Party "Os Verdes" (PEV), and Democratic Intervention (ID) to form the United Democratic Coalition (CDU) in September 30, 1987.

Party has been led by its General Secretary Jerónimo de Sousa since November 7, 2004 [Partido_Comunista_Português (PCP)].
