Description | Center-right, Christian-democratic party founded by former prime minister and foreign minister Diogo Freitas do Amaral shortly after the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974. Party was initially launched as the Centro Democrático Social (CDS), adding Partido Popular (PP) as an embellishment in 1993. Party maintains a base among rural communities, especially in Portugal's North Region (Região do Norte) and its capital Porto, and maintains a strong opposition to abortion. Party has been led by MP and attorney Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos since January 26, 2020 [Centro Democrático e Social – Partido Popular (CDS–PP)]. |
