Description | Croatia's largest center-left party formed as the successor to the Communist Party of Croatia, which became the League of Communists of Croatia (SKH) in 1952, itself a sub-component of the larger Communist Party of Yugoslavia. When Yugoslavia began to break apart, the SKH tried to present itself as a modern reformist party by dissolving and then rebranding itself as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on November 3, 1990, but to no avail. The SDP was only able to recapture government twice since independence was declared on June 25, 1991 - 2000-2003 under the SDP's founder Ivica Račan, and 2011-2015 under Croatia's current president (since 2/19/20) Zoran Milanović [Socijaldemokratska partija Hrvatske (SDP)]. |
