Description | Centrist, liberal-democratic party focused on democratization, free markets and civil rights in Cambodia. Party was formed by merger of the Sam Rainsy Party and Human Rights Party in 2012, both led by Sam Raisny, who also took control of new, merged party. Party grew in stature after taking a stand against the nationwide government confiscation of private lands, particularly in the countryside (called the "land grabbing crisis"). Raisny ran for Prime Minister in the elections held in July 28, 2013, his party picking up a surprising 55 seats (vs 68 for Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party). Years of government harassment and persecution culminated in the party's ban by the Cambodian Supreme Court on November 16, 2017 at the direction of the authoritarian government of Hun Sen. Party executives were subsequently either incarcerated (party president Kem Sokha was arrested in September 2017 and still remains behind bars to this day) or had fled Cambodia (party founder Sam Waisny lives in exile in France). All of the party's legislative members were unceremoniously removed, the majority of whom incarcerated. Party was succeeded 'unofficially' by the re-animated Sam Raisny Party, which operated sub rosa until 2018, when it was renamed the Candlelight Party (Party's leadership was threatened with arrest in early 2023 and the party was blocked on May 15, 2023 from offering candidates in the July 23, 2023 election) [គណបក្សសង្គ្រោះជាតិ]. |
