Leftist multilingual party founded as a movement by Marxist students at the Catholic University of Leuven in tandem with the student-led civil unrest begun at the Sorbonne in France which started in May 1968 (called "Mai 68"). Party at first was named AMADA (Alle Macht Aan De Arbeiders; All Power To The Workers) renaming itself the Workers Party of Belgium in 1979. Party operates under the same acronym in all regions of Belgium, refusing to launch sister language-specific parties after the Federal re-constitution promulgated in 1993. Party managed to achieve its best results at federal and regional levels after elections held on May 26, 2019. Party has been led by Raoul Hedebouw since 2021 [Partij van de Arbeid van België (PVDA); Parti du Travail de Belgique (PTB); Partei der Arbeit Belgiens (PAB)] Party goes by the official acronym PVDA-PTB or PTB-PVDA.
