| Description | Eclectic party inspired by the launch of the world's first Pirate Party in Sweden in 2006. Party began as a simple copyright and patent law reform movement founded by Birgitta Jónsdóttir and Smári McCarthy, then expanded to civil rights, transparency, freedom of information and expression, free knowledge sharing and direct democracy.
Movement officially registered as Píratar, without 'Party` added. Party leaders are chosen at the start of each parliamentary session by coin toss. (Pírataflokkur or sjóræningjaflokkur; nickname 'Pirate Party Iceland'). |
