Description | Center-right party founded by former Parti congolais du travail (PCT) baron Jean-Pierre Thystère-Tchicaya, mayor of Pointe-Noire from 1994 to 1997 and president of Congo's National Assembly from 2002 to 2007. Party began as a force which advocated for social democratic values until civil war in 1997, and the seizure of government by strongman Denis Sassou-Nguesso with the assistance of Angolan forces, brought about Thystère-Tchicaya's turn-about and accommodation to Sassou-Nguesso's dictatorial rule. A few years after his death in 2008, Thystère-Tchicaya's son, Jean-Marc, took command of the party and became one of the regime's strongest champions, and a government minister (since 2015). Jean-Marc Thystère-Tchicaya has led the RDPS since May 23, 2015. The RDPS is one of eight government "controlled" (contrôlée) opposition formations [Rassemblement pour la démocratie et le progrès social (RDPS]. |
