Description | Left-wing 'Social Democratic' party and the oldest remaining in the Czech Republic. Party was launched after a mass demonstration of Czech and German workers which took place at a mountain-top named Ještěd in 1878. The 'Czech Social Democrats' were a partner-party within the All-Austrian Social Democratic Party [Czechs were still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire - known as the territory of Bohemia and Moravia (1878-1907)]. A 'golden age' of predominance began after elections held in 1998, which saw the party take control of Government for the first time under Miloš Zeman (July 17, 1998-July 15, 2002), and top position in Parliament with 74 seats. Party had been led by 1st Deputy Prime Minister Jan Hamáček since February 18, 2018, who chose to resign on October 25, 2021 as a consequence of poor 2021 parliamentary election results, which forced the CSSD out of parliament for the first time in its history, taking just 4.68 percent of the vote [Česká strana sociálně demokratická (ČSSD)]. |
