Far left, Marxist-Leninist-Maoist party involved in armed revolutionary efforts against Sri Lankan governments in 1971 (the "1971 uprising") and in 1987-89 (the "1987–89 Insurgency").
Party was founded in 1965 as a China Communist party ally by Rohana Wijeweera, who split from the Soviet Russia-allied Communist Party of Sri Lanka in 1964.
The JVP has been led by 2019 presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayaka since 2014 (party translated as the People's Liberation Front).
