Description | Center-left party formed as the result of a split in the ruling National Alliance for Reconstruction in 1988.
New party was launched in 1989 by attorney Basdeo Panday who led his party to victory in 1995 and became prime minister on November 9, 1995 until a split in the party caused the UNC to lose its parliamentary majority and control of the government on December 24, 2001.
In May 2010, the UNC returned to government and took the prime ministership as the majority party in a People's Partnership coalition led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Party has been in opposition since losing the September 7, 2015 general election. |
