DescriptionA movement among Southern Republicans to distinguish themselves as the "white" party to try to make gains on the Democratic Stronghold in the south around the turn of the century.

The "Lily White" Republicans were one of two factions in the South, the other being the "Black & Tan" faction. The Lily Whites felt that Republicans needed to abandon the policy of relying upon the black vote and seek to win without it. They gained the upper hand when the Democratic Party eliminated negro suffrage in the 1899--1905 era. After that time, the minority faction was known as the "tans." The Lily Whites should not be confused with the Dixiecrats of a later generation, as they did not support segregation or the Jim Crow laws.
