Description | Right-of-center Hungarian-nationalist party founded by Gabor Vona and Gergely Pongrátz, student leader during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Party initially held anti-Turkish, anti-Israeli (some say anti-Semitic) and anti-capitalist views, moderating its tone before elections held in 2014, the so-called néppártosodás, which helped to enhance its popularity with the public. Party held on to its strong nationalist views, which calls for a 'Greater Hungary' and "territorial autonomy" for ethnic Hungarian-dominated lands in the Balkans and Central Europe, particularly the 'Székely Land' of Romania. Party led the anti-regime United for Hungary coalition launched in 2021 and forwarded former member Péter Márki-Zay as the coalition's prime-ministerial candidate in 2022. Party suffered a major defeat after National Assembly elections held on April 3, 2022, collapsing to 10 seats in the 199-seat chamber. Party president since 2019 is Péter Jakab [Movement for a Better Hungary; Jobbik Magyarországért Mozgalom (Jobbik; Jobbik is a play on words meaning Right Way)]. |
