Marxist-Socialist populist party founded and led by the 65th President of Bolivia, Juan Evo Morales. After Morales had been expelled from the now-defunct Assembly for the Sovereignty of the Peoples (Asamblea por la Soberanía de los Pueblos, ASP) in 1997 after a bitter battle for leadership with ASP founder Alejo Véliz, Morales and allies launched the Movement for Socialism, which began as the indigenous-interests Political Instrument for the Sovereignty of the Peoples (IPSP). After a bitter dispute between Bolivia's 67th president and MAS leader Luis Arce, Morales effected the "self-expulsion” from the party of Arce and his vice president David Coquehuanca on October 4, 2023, and another 20 of Arce's allies. Morales vowed to run as a presidential candidate for the 2025 elections. Party holds 75 seats in the 130-seat Chamber of Deputies and 21 seats in the 36-seat Senate [Movement for Socialism – Political Instrument for the Sovereignty of the Peoples; Movimiento al Socialismo – Instrumento Político por la Soberanía de los Pueblos (MAS or MAS-IPSP)].
