Secularist, left-of-center party formed from the banned and dissolved Union of Democratic Forces-New Era led by Ahmed Ould Daddah. Party in its heyday held 15 out of 95 seats after the 2006 parliamentary election. Its support and involvement in the the military coup d'état of August 6, 2008, which ousted the duly-elected President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, subsequently brought the party into some disrepute as an ally of disaffected generals [Rassemblement des Forces Démocratiques (RFD); تكتل القوى الديمقراطية].
