Description | Former ruling party of Guinea-Conakry co-founded and led by strongman Alpha Condé until his overthrow on September 5, 2021. Party began as the National Democratic Movement (Mouvement national démocratique, MND), which was renamed the Unite Justice Patrie (Unité, justice, patrie, UJP) in 1987, then the Rally of Guinean Patriots (Rassemblement des patriotes guinéens, RPG) in 1988, finally settling on Rally of the Guinean People in 1992. Party identified itself as socialist and a focal point for Guinea's Mandinka people. Upon Condé's ascension as president of Guinea on December 21, 2010, the party grew to almost completely dominate the nation's parliament. Condé was removed as party president in 2021 and the new regime installed Ibrahima Kassory Fofana, a former prime minister of Guinea, as president on March 31, 2022. Party currently holds just one seat in the newly formed National Council of the Transition, which replaced the National Assembly on January 22, 2022 [Rassemblement du Peuple Guinéen (RPG)].
