Description | Charitable organization established in 1979 turned party then army formed by Tutsi exiles and refugees living in neighboring Uganda. Party began as the Rwandese Alliance for National Unity (RANU) in 1980, which ostensibly sought to overthrow Hutu dominance in Rwanda but wound up battling against the Uganda government under President Milton Obote instead, and contributed to his overthrow in 1985. Uganda's new President Yoweri Museveni rewarded his Rwandan allies by incorporating them into the Ugandan army, favoring, in particular, his new chief of military operations Paul Kagame (who would become President and strongman of Rwanda beginning on March 24, 2000). Kagame then transformed RANU into the Rwandan Patriotic Front, a party and rebel armed group formed in 1987 that won the Rwandan civil war and ended Tutsi dominance in 1994. Party formed a five-party ruling coalition consisting of itself, the Parti démocrate centriste (PDC), the Parti démocratique idéal (PDI),the Parti pour le progrès et la concorde (PPC) and the Union démocratique du peuple rwandais (UDPR) ahead of legislative elections planned for September 2023. Party holds 37 out of 80 seats in the Rwanda Chamber of Deputies [Front patriotique rwandais (FPR)]. |
