Description | Left-wing Māori, indigenous-rights party begun as the Māori Party (officially renamed Te Pāti Māori effective July 12, 2023 [Link] Party competes for representation among reserved Māori electorates. Party was founded by former Labour Party leader and minister Tariana Turia. Party upholds the rights granted the Māori people by the Treaty of Waitangi signed on February 6, 1840 by Captain William Hobson of the British Crown and by Māori chiefs. Party is co-lead by MPs Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi, who both hold the party's two seats in the 119-seat parliament. Party president is media personality John Tamihere. |
