Description | Партии российского единства и согласия
Partii Rossiiskovo (Y)edinistva i Soglasiya
The Party of Russian Unity & Concord (sometimes translated as Unity & Accord) was a democratic centrist party led by Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Shakhray. The party was not driven by ideology, instead relying on Shakhray's image and connections with business and political interests. The party proved popular in Russia's ethnic republics that tended to oppose the Kremlin's shock therapy reforms but still wanted to be in Yeltsin's good graces. PRES took three single-member districts in the 1993 election and won 7% in the proportional vote.
In the lead-up to the 1995 legislative elections Shakhray sought to form a new ruling party with Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. While Shakhray was willing to cede the leadership to Chernomyrdin, he pulled PRES out of the project when he was denied a lofty position on the Our Home is Russia (NDR) party list. Because of this the two parties ran separately, and after PRES finished far behind NDR, it largely ceased to exist. |
