Description | Former rebel group turned party led by businessman, 2003 Vice President and Defense Minister (since March 23, 2023) Jean Pierre Bemba. Bemba led the Movement for the Liberation of the Congo with the backing of the government of Rwanda, one of many such groups launched during a civil war involving neighboring countries which lasted from 1998 to 2002 (called the Second Congo War). Bemba's MLC managed to capture northern DR Congo and fought against the regime of Laurent-Désiré Kabila, who had been backed by the armies of Zimbabwe, Chad, Angola and Namibia. Bemba's Movement became a party on April 5, 2003 after Kabila's overthrow and assassination. Bemba's party at first joined the opposition Lamuka ('Wake up') coalition led by 2018 presidential candidate Martin Fayulu. Bemba has since become a strong ally of two-time President Felix Tshisekedi, allying his party to Tshisekedi's Sacred Union coalition [Mouvement de Libération du Congo (MLC)]. |
