'Big-tent' center-right party born of a split within the ruling PDP–Laban in 1988 when Jose "Peping" Cojuangco, Jr. took his allies out of the PDP to join forces with PDP rival, Speaker Ramon Mitra. Party has since 1992 been identified as a vehicle for the Angara family, starting with Edgardo J. Angara, his brother and the LDP's second chairman Arthur Angara and sister and current president Bella Angara.
