DescriptionIn the lead-up to the 1924 presidential election, several Republican splinter groups attempted to create a state LaFollette party, against the wishes of the LaFollette presidential campaign. Courts forced all these movements to drop "LaFollette" from their party names, and the sole group that remained long enough to make the ballot changed its name to the State Party.

Its candidate was W.A. Gilmore, a previously-conservative Republican who now loudly supported LaFollette and claimed the progressive mantle. Gilmore ads attacked other candidates as faux-progressives and urged LaFollette voters to support the State Party.

Gilmore only drew one half percent of the vote in the end, and after the election appeared to have returned to his GOP loyalist ways. It is unknown whether this behaviour was genuine or if it and the entire State Party movement was simply a ruse perpetuated by low-level Republicans in an attempt to splinter the progressive vote.
