Description | Eco-socialist, left-of-center party founded and chaired until 2013 by Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, Iceland's longest-serving member of parliament (1983-2021), and former minister and parliamentary president. Party was registered as the "The Left Movement – Green Candidacy" (Vinstrihreyfingin – grænt framboð) but is more commonly known as the "Left Greens" (Vinstri græns). Sigfússon's injury on January 16, 2006 after a car crash left him incapacitated, and the party chair passed on to Katrín Jakobsdóttir on February 24, 2013, who would later become Iceland's 28th Prime Minister. Party has been chaired since April 5, 2024 by Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, Iceland's Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, after Katrín Jakobsdóttir's resignation [Vinstrihreyfingin – grænt framboð or Vinstri Græn (VG or electoral symbol 'V')]. |
