Description | Right-of-center opposition party formed in 1972 through a merger between the United Bahamian Party (UBP), controlled by British-descended politicians (launched in 1958) and the "Free PLP", alienated Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) members dissatisfied with the authoritarian direction of their party (also called "The Dissident Eight").
Party was founded by former PLP member, Sir Cecil Wallace Whitfield.
The FNM took control of the government for the first time following the August 19, 1992 general elections, taking 33 out of 49 seats in the National Assembly.
Party held on again briefly beginning in 2007 then won a landslide 35 out of 39 Assembly seats after the May 10, 2017 elections. |
