Description | Российская Демократическая Партия "Яблоко"
Rossiiskaya Demokraticheskaya Partiya "Yabloko"
Liberal reformist party led by Grigory Yavlinsky. Yabloko seeks to protect social freedom and to establish a strong link between Russia and the West, including supporting Russian entry into the European Union. They are often critical of the authoritarian practices of President Putin.
Yabloko's vote percentage has steadily decreased since the first Duma election in 1993. In the 2003 elections, they failed to break the national 5% mark needed for parliamentary proportional representation status for the first time, though they dispute they truly failed to reach that benchmark. They have since explored the possibility of a national coalition with the Union of Right Forces, after such a coalition earned an unexpected 11% of the vote in Moscow's 2005 municipal elections.
"Yabloko" is derived from an acronym of the names of its founders: Yavlinsky, Yuri Boldyrev, and Vladimir Lukin. It is also the Russian word for apple.
Leader: Sergey Mitrokhin
