| Description | Sunni-Islamist paramilitary and political arm of the Syrian Transitional Government led by Syrian revolutionary figure Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani, now titular Head of Syria upon the overthrow of Bahir al-Assad on November 8, 2024. The HTS was the chief armed force behind the success of the movement in the lead-up to al-Assad's downfall, and is at the vanguard of re-organizing and controlling Syria's armed forces. HTS is led by Syria's defense minister since November 21, 2024, Abu Hassan al-Hamwi, who served as the commander-in-chief of the military wing of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham [هيئة تحرير الشام (HTS); Organization for the Liberation of the Levant]. |
