Flemish center-right party known prior to 2001 as the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP) which emerged in 1968 from the Parti Social Chrétien-Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP-PSC) founded in 1945, which itself had as an antecedent the Catholic Party launched in 1869. The CVP-PSC split into two regional/language-specific counterparts in 1968; the Flemish CVP and the Francophone Parti Social Chrétien (PSC, called Les Engagés since March 17, 2022). Party had in 1971 also found a Germanophone sister called the Christlich Soziale Partei (CSP). Party has endured a steady drop in representation in both the Senate and the Belgian Chamber after every legislative cycle since 1971, falling to a present-day 12 seats after elections held on May 26, 2019, its lowest in history. After the shock of witnessing a dramatic fall in its standing in polls released on May 2022, the party restructured root and branch. Party has been led by former minister and MP Sammy Mahdi since June 25, 2022 [Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V)].
