Description | Monarchist party supporting the restoration of the House of Zogu (Zog) in Albania. Party began as as an underground response to Mussolini's invasion of Albania on April 7, 1939, Italy's deposition of the Albanian king, Zog I, and subsequent creation of the Italian protectorate of Albania (1939–1943) officially led by Italian King Victor Emmanuel III. Party emerged from hiding on November 1943 after the Italian capitulation in September 1943, only to be banned during the subsequent German occupation, its members hunted down. Members and sympathizers who emerged at the end of 2nd World War welcomed the attempted restoration of King Zog and the monarchy, but were executed during the authoritarian reign of Enver Hoxha (October 23, 1944 – April 11, 1985). Party re-emerged upon Hoxha's death in 1985, registered itself on February 20, 1992, and backed a referendum in 1997 which proposed to restore the monarchy in the person of Zog's son Leka Zogu who, since 1961, had been styled "Leka I, King of the Albanians." Party is a successor to the "Triumph of Legality" movement formed on December 24, 1924. Party is led by Shpetim Axhami [Partia Lëvizja e Legalitetit (PLL)]. |
