Description | Conservative Islamist, pro-monarchy party and the nation's largest for a decade after elections held November 25, 2011. Party suffered a severe drubbing after elections held on September 8, 2021, collapsing to 8th position and 13 seats (from 125). Party was founded by the first leader of Morocco's House of Representatives, Abdelkrim al-Khatib. Party emerged from Khatib's Popular Democratic Constitutional Movement in 1988, during a period of national emergency declared in 1965 by King Hassan II after a revolutionized Algeria declared war on Morocco (the 1963–1964 "Sand War"). Morocco subsequently faced a nation-wide convulsion led by the Algeria-allied Marxist Union nationale des forces populaires (UNFP), which lasted until 1970. The PJD was led by ex Prime Minister (March 17, 2017– September 10, 2021 ) Saadeddine Othmani from July 20, 2008 to September 9, 2021. [Parti de la justice et du développement (PJD)]. |
